How to Layer Your Skincare Products

A thoughtful skincare routine isn't defined by the number of products you use—it's defined by how well those products work together. Layering skincare correctly allows each formula to absorb as intended, helping your routine feel more effective without becoming unnecessarily complicated.

While every routine is unique, following a consistent order ensures that each step supports the next. Think of layering as building a foundation, where every product has its place and purpose.

Start with the Lightest Formulas

After cleansing, begin with products that have the lightest texture. Hydrating toners and lightweight serums are designed to absorb quickly, delivering hydration and preparing the skin for richer formulations applied later.

If you're using more than one serum, apply them one at a time, allowing each layer a few moments to settle before moving on. This not only helps the products absorb more comfortably but also encourages a slower, more intentional routine.

As a general rule, work from thinner textures to thicker ones. Water-based products typically come before creams and facial oils, allowing each layer to reach the skin more effectively.

There's no need to rush. Skincare is one of the few moments in the day where slowing down can be part of the experience.

Seal in Hydration

Once lighter products have been absorbed, apply your moisturizer to help lock in hydration and support the skin's natural barrier. Moisturizer acts as the final nourishing layer, helping reduce moisture loss while keeping the skin feeling balanced throughout the day or night.

If facial oils are part of your routine, they're generally best applied after moisturizer, helping to seal everything in and provide additional comfort for skin that feels particularly dry.

During your morning routine, always finish with a broad-spectrum sunscreen. SPF should be the final step before makeup, protecting your skin from daily UV exposure while preserving the benefits of the products beneath it.

Keep It Simple

Layering more products doesn't always produce better results. In fact, using too many active ingredients at once can sometimes leave the skin feeling overwhelmed rather than supported.

Instead of chasing lengthy routines, focus on choosing products that complement one another. A cleanser, hydrating serum, moisturizer, and sunscreen are often enough to create a balanced daily ritual. Additional treatments can be introduced gradually as your skin's needs evolve.

Remember that consistency will always have a greater impact than complexity. A routine that's simple enough to follow every day is often the one that delivers the most noticeable results over time.

Skincare should never feel like a list of rules to memorise. It's a practice of understanding your skin, responding to its needs, and creating a ritual you'll genuinely enjoy returning to—morning and evening.
